The Worshipper That God Seeks

Did you know that God seeks something from you? Did you realize that you are so important to God that not only did he send His son, Jesus to die for your sins, but that he actually seeks something from you? In John 4:23-24, Jesus said, “But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him. God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” That’s right, God seeks true worshippers…those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. However, to understand the gravity of what is being said here in John 4:23-24, we must understand the meaning of worship. Interestingly enough, the English word for “Worship” literally means “Worthship.” (merriam-webster.com). Worship is an act of Reverence and Homage shown to the one who is believed to be worthy. It is to Revere stressing the feeling of awe or devotion when worshiping God. It is to render religious Service or Homage to God. So, Worship is a matter of the heart because only out of one’s heart can True Worship (Awe, Reverence, Homage, Devotion, and Service) flow.

God is the only one worthy of worship because He is the creator and sustainer of everything. Psalm 96:5 in the Amplified Bible translation paints a good picture of this for us when it says, “For all the gods of the peoples are [worthless, lifeless] idols, but the Lord made the heavens.” Only God is worthy so only He is qualified to be the object of worship. To worship anyone or anything else is to misplace and misappropriate our worship. Worship is an intimate relationship between the Christian believer and God and flows out of our love for God. However, since worship is a matter of the heart, it is not limited to a place, but rather goes with us everywhere we go and becomes a part of who we are as a follower of Christ.

So, God seeks something from us and that something is Relationship, which is expressed through Worship and is a matter of the heart. God wants our hearts! He wants us to submit to His Lordship recognizing Him as Sovereign God. There are so many things vying for our hearts in this world, but there is nothing and no one in this world who is worth our worship. Give God your Heart today, submit to His Lordship, and worship Him in all that you do wherever you may be.
